Recently, My good friend " Ben Beezayon", the leader and grand sorcerer of the Silver Spring List Serve posted an announcement for a meeting that will be taking place. I have copied the Email and placed below:
EVENT: MEET BEN KRAMER, CANDIDATE FOR MONTGOMERY COUNTY COUNCIL
DATE: SUNDAY, MARCH 15, 7 PM
LOCATION: 11601 YEATMAN TERRACE, SILVER SPRING (Dayanim home)
HOST COMMITTEE: Behnam and Carey Dayanim, Alec and Lisa Stone, David and Aviva Janus, Panina Licht, Amy Werbin, Jennifer and Jeff Zukerman
This is not a fundraiser. There is no required contribution to attend.
On behalf of the entire Host Committee, I am pleased to invite you to meet State Del. Ben Kramer, at 7 pm on Sunday, March 15, at our home, 11601 Yeatman Terrace in Kemp Mill. Ben is running to succeed Don Praisner in representing District 4 on the Montgomery County Council. District 4 includes Kemp Mill, Aspen Hill and Olney, among other places. A special election has been scheduled to fill the seat, with the primary on April 21 and the general election on May 19.
Ben currently represents us in the General Assembly in Annapolis and comes from a long tradition of service to the County. He is the son of former County Executive Sid Kramer and brother of current state senator Rona Kramer. Ben will bring to the Council extensive business and legislative experience and a responsible, disciplined fiscal approach in these troubled times. He also enjoys a long association with and advocacy of issues and ideas important to our community. Not the least among these is his support for and recognition of the important role played by our nonpublic schools.
I hope you will join us on the 15th to meet Ben for yourselves and to learn why I and many others support his candidacy.

Question for all you Kollelnicks
For all of you who are in Kollel I have a question. If the Kollel did not pay you $50,000 a year, and tuition was not covered for your kids, would you still learn at that kollel? Or does hishtadlus tell you to look for a Job and make a Kavuah seder for the night?
Yes folks, $50,000 for the White Oak Kollel!! Incentives include Free tuition at the expense of the community so tack on another $10,000 plus other tax benefits.

Breaking News!
Apparently, there are some readers who believe that Kollels are supported by G-D only. Communities have nothing to do with paying for there children, rents, and so forth...
I find it selfish that Baal Habbatim have to limit their amount of children that they bring into this world due to the financial hardships and mounting bills that occur. However, kollel members appear to have the Green light to produce many beautiful children. Are they entitled to this benefit more so then Ball Habbatim?

Does Silver Spring Need another Kollel?
Although this topic has never been brought up on this blog it is an important one for those who will need to pay for the new kollel member's tuitions.
White Oak has started a shtark kollel called the Kollel of Greater Washington. Granted it is nice to have Torah being spread amongst the community, however was this needed?
I look at it like this: If a community needs to grow there has to be money involved. Essentially that was the idea for starting this kollel. Why then would it make sense to attract more families, who will need financial assistance? How does this inflate a community? If the money runs out the incentive (in this case the kollel) disappears.
I look at the Yeshiva kollel, How successful was it to draw in a big Jewish community? Was it kollel that increased the Kemp Mill community? Or is it the schools in the area that bring the people in?
Personally, I think it is a Leader that draws people to a community. We all have seen established communities pick themselves up and move to Israel, for example. I leader defines their people, not a people defining a Leader.
Torah should not be used as an incentive to draw people to a community. There is no Halachic ruling that says that a "Kollel" needs to be in a community or even two. There is a need to have a Mikva, and a Shul.
Torah is an essential platform that a community needs to be created on but if it is used as a
"cheap" tool to create a community it can not happen. I think that using it as a tool is actually degrading it and may touch on using HIS name in vain.

Ritalin for the Economy - Now is the time to act fast!
Yesterday, the House passed a stimulus bill that allocated Billions of Dollars for our Economy. Part of this package was a large portion set aside for education. Below is an excerpt from WSJ:

"In the education realm, the stimulus aims more than $125 billion at bolstering public education, an unusual federal intervention in a sphere usually left to state and local governments. It calls for spending $20 billion on school and college renovations. There's another $79 billion proposed for aid to the states to help them avoid education-related layoffs. In addition, more than $2 billion would go to the Head Start program, $13 billion to supplemental funding for high-poverty areas, and another $13 billion for special-education programs."
The odds are that this bill will pass and if it does this gives us, the JEWISH COMMUNITY of Silver Spring, the right to demand back the portion of taxes that will be paying for this bill to fund our Private schools.
All kidding aside, why can't we start a petition that could be passed around the whole Jewish community that would state that we want a portion (not even full) voucher/funds to support our schools. We (for all that pay taxes) will be paying Kemp Mill Elementary more money for each of our kids whom are not even sitting in classrooms there. On top of this, we will be paying 10k plus for Private schools.
The petition should be an ultimatum: Provide some funds for each of our children/register every one of children with our local school system. Montgomery County is going through a huge budget deficit, just imagine if they would now have to deal with 2-3000 children registering for classes.
Any views and suggestions on how to start such a thing... could you imagine how much more our community could stimulate our local economy with this type of savings!!

RCA member Davens with the newly annointed Mashiach
Yup...it is true. I read this story at Haaretz.com. I am going to post now the response of the RCA:
" Rabbi Haskel Lookstein, the head of New York's Kehilath Jeshurun synagogue and a leading member of the city's modern Orthodox community, was one of several religious leaders who took part in reading sections of a nondenominational responsive prayer during the National Prayer Service at Washington's National Cathedral."
RCA response: "The long-standing policy of the Rabbinical Council of America, in accordance with Jewish law, is that participation in a prayer service held in the sanctuary of a church is prohibited," the statement read. "Any member of the RCA who attends such a service does so in contravention of this policy and should not be perceived as representing the organization in any capacity."
What a nice political statement. Why haven't they thrown him out of the RCA? Why such a not attacking response?
If we look back at a controversy in Monsey around the talmid Chacham R. Mordechai Tendler, who the RCA dumped on, and ruined his life and future, and on top of all this, he has been vindicated on all accounts!!!!
What double standing B.S. We are dealing with Avodah Zarah here folks!!! I was taught that this one is considered as Yhareg val Yavor...the big three. This is all the RCA is going to do!!!

Max's Has Listened to our post and our voice
It appears that Max's has listened to the voices of reason....my blog. I have just confirmed this after speaking with them. The Sushi will be served in the evenings.
IS this going to last??? Absolutely not. For the same reason they closed down this option in the first place.
I think if Sushi is going to make it it needs to be a full day affair. I really think the Pizza store/Pastry oven needs to consider this option. These facilities do not require a full time Mashgiach, which would help lower the costs.
Once again we try and fall short and set ourselves up for failure. I hope the Pastry Oven opens it's doors to this idea.
Anyway...the sushi will probably be made by some underpaid/illegal Hispanic, who knows Sushi like a Mashgiach knows Kashrus!
Let us pray together that someday Silver Spring will obtain the stature of a Large Jewish Community that will have all the resources a "big" Jewish community has...we are almost there...we got Chinese, pizza, Mexican, BUT NO SUSHI.....I tell you what let us take baby steps, FIRST get SUSHI then build a Mikva! There is a Kabbalistic connection as fish is a simin for Pru Urevu.
In the words of our new President:

Olos Ha Shaccur - At Last
I heard this title from a dear person of mine.
I apologise for the lack of posts. I have been quite busy!
So here he is the New President of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!
I thought the speech was terrible and had zero positive tone. I also think that Obama failed(as usual) to put his heart into the speech. He is a great speaker, however, he continues to fall short of having his heart drive his words.
One thing I noticed about Obama throughout his campaign and even now is his lack of patriotism.
However, for the first time ever, I saw a picture of him saluting with a general during the parade. To his credit it was really the first time I have ever seen this before from him. He looked a bit stiff and the pose seemed un-natural for him.
Let us start this new beginning off with a poll!!!

Democrats have nerve, what a double standard
We are all aware of what happened in Chicago with Blagoavitch. Recently, he had appointed a senator to the open seat that B.O. had left(smelly).
It appears that the democratic party was up in arms about Mr. Burris's appointment but NOT because of his long history of government work for Chicago, because he certainly has the resume for the freshman senator position.
However, it is the "tainted" ASSOCIATION he has with BLAGO and the method of him being appointed to the senate seat by him!!
Let's then examine this objectively...
We have a well-versed, experienced, government worker who has all the things a senator needs. He has been LEGALLY appointed to the senate seat by the LEGALLY sitting governor of Chicago.
His appointment is only in question due to his " associations" with the fellow who appointed him... Follow me now...
B.O. not a long track record as a government maker, ASSOCIATED with:
1. William Ayers, a person who bombed the Capitol building, terrorist.
2. Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who curses America, Israel, etc. B.O. was a active member of his church for over a decade...

Happy New Year - Let's Start on a Fresh Note
Happy New Year to all that celebrate and look forward to it!
I would like to take this time to thank all my followers, believers, and non-believers on their contributions to the Blog whether it was intelligent or grade school like...for a mouse!
Although us Jews do not believe in New Years Day, we should however acknowledge it as a day off to spend time with the family, and look forward to the business year..for those of us that work!!
As a new President looms...B.O. will filling the air in Washington...I recommend that we all take the precautionary measures from protecting ourselves from B.O.
1. Don't work as hard
2. Don't "Socialize" with your friends and fellow citizens
3. "Guard" yourself "Right" from B.O's attempt to drain your Dollars
4. Look out for B.O.'s smelly politics as evidenced from the armpit of America..Chicago
Do not "change" your greetings to B"O from B"H...

The "CHEVRA Kidisha" - Is it worth it??
Okay, by now I hope I got your attention. If you live in Silver Spring and you know of the potpourri of Minyanim in YISE, there has been a shortfall of $$$ to provide a Kiddush every single Shabbos at the 8:00 Minyan.
For those of you that are from out of Maryland, the CHEVRA is a anonymous (mmm... maybe there is something wrong with that) group/club that pays a certain amount of money every month on top of their membership dues to be able to supply a Kiddish every week.
Most recently, there has been an appeal to recruit more members and increase the "CHEVRA Kidisha" membership by + $100 or something.
Wow...what blatant Chutzpa! What a bunch of fiscally irresponsible fools!
This is the same type of thinking for the Mikva....Yes the Mikva!!
Let's get our priorities straight!! Why not appeal for each member to pay their regular membership dues in on time!!?? Why do we need a kiddush every single shabbos????
Let's cut spending not increase!!! This is the problem with today's thinking!! It is all about the luxury not about the basics!

MAD"e"OFF with alot of money - How does this affect SILVER SPRING
Another one bites the dust....just a few billion dollars...nothing much..
How does this effect the Silver Spring Community?...and forget about other cities because frankly they do not even know we exist.
Well for starters there has been mention that the Federation has lost a nice sum of money. This will definitely effect school budgets all around the Greater Washington area.
On top of all that is the poor economy that has strapped every ones wallet to their pocket.
BUT WAIT!!! I HAVE A GREAT IDEA!!
LET'S RAISE MONEY FOR A MIKVA!!
Now would be the perfect time when things are rosy!
Schools need to start reconsidering their fundraising or methods of cutting costs and raising money now!!
I truly hope that the intention of the fundraisers and Boards of the schools think about the future of TORAH in community and not lining their own pockets with percentages, bonuses, and raises.
I think now is a better time then ever to approach our local government for assistance as we are paying a seat for each of our children in the local public schools and not getting anything in return. We need to ask parents to advocate and take any measures necessary to push the county in providing more assistance. Why not consider sending our children to schools in the community and opening up Jewish Day programs in the afternoon? Advocate for buses, supplies. Conceptualize the idea of having a public school filled with Jewish children. Perhaps have teachers who currently teach English apply for positions at the various public schools.
I think schools need to be creative and aggressive with the county.

To Light or Not to Light---This Channukah/Xmas - Nittel Nacht
A Channukah approaches I have been hearing many shaylas of lighting one's menorrah at a hotel while they are t'urid in the casino.
Questions that are being asked:
1. If I get a free suite at Atlantic City but it is on the 40th floor should I light in that suite or request a suite on a lower floor but have to pay $250
2. Dealer is showing an "2" and I am showing a "9" and "2"(blackjack), and Zman Hadlaka has just approached, should I double down and then light or allow the chassidishe guy next to me to play my hand while I go and perform the mitzva.
3. If Zman Hadlaka approaches and a $5 table opens up that I have waiting for 1 hour, do I go and light and allow my fellow brother take my spot or sit down?
4. Am I Yotzai Hadlaka with my Cigar(which lasts 30 minutes) that I just bought at the gift shop? Persumai Nisa and there is
30 min, and Holchai Drachim in the market place.
5. Would it be a bizayon to play and sleep at Ceasar's Palace on Channuka/Xmas?
A lichdika Channuka!

Ethical Dilemma: Pay for a Mikva or Pay in my Tushin(tuition)
Which one of these important Jewish entities should I shell out for?
Below is a copy of a letter I sent to the initiators of the Mikva proposal. I do not want to waste my time with repeating it so here it is:

Mr. xxxxx and Mr. xxxxxxx,
After reading the letter of appeal for the Silver Spring Mikva many thoughts went through my mind. In particular, the statement that references the importance of funding a vital facility that is so “dependent” on the future of this community. The troubling fact is that many hard working families are over burdened with other significant contributions that also play a vital role in the future of this Jewish community.
School tuition is through the roof and I do not have to tell you of the current numbers, as I am sure you already know. I have heard a number of younger members of the community state that they may not be able to have as many children as they like to due to the price it costs to teach them Torah. This thinking is quite alarming and pretty sad but also contradicts the main objective of the Mikva as you eloquently put in your appeal.
In your letter of appeal there is a point to request “all income-earning families” to support the new Mikva. In reading this statement I assume that “all income-earning families” includes the staff of day schools, rebbeim, rabbi’s of the community, lawyers, doctors, etc. To sum it up, the significance of building a facility that would support the “future” of the Jewish community is again at risk requiring the financial support from “all” income - earning families.
The years learning in different Yeshivas has taught me that Talmud Torah k’negid kulam. However, there is no requirement for “all” income families to pay tuition or at least something that they could afford. We have rebbeim and administrators that have many beautiful children who go to Jewish schools absolutely free. Does this make sense? We have Rebbeim and Adminstrators earning more money then some hard working families in the community who struggle to place their children in Jewish schools and on top of it must pay for the many children who get the “benefit” of free tuition. On the one hand everyone is urged to contribute to the Mikva (a vital facility for the future of the community) but when it comes to Talmud Torah the “everyone” is some how forgotten.
I support the building of a new state of the art Mikva for this community; however, our priorities are out of synch. It is heart wrenching to hear young families using the price of Talmud Torah as a method of “birth control”. It is unfair to see many heads of Jewish schools receive executive salaries for the most significant mitzvah of learning and teaching Torah. Let’s rethink the priorities and the unfortunate truths that many community members feel.

What does Kemp Mill Shopping Center Need Next??
I was recently informed that an optician will be joining the ranks of the Kemp Mill Armory in the Shopping Center...Great..
We need something exciting..Something different..Heck if we are planning to build a GLORIOUS MIKVA than why stop there? With this New Mikva we will be compared with other major cities and yet we do not even have a Kosher Sushi store, let alone a flashig restaurant in the shopping center!!
What is it about Kemp mill??
